Iowa Pace Symposium

   On April 24th and 25th, four members of Green Hills Autism Resource Team attended the PACE
(Professionals in Autism Consultation and Education) Symposium in Cedar Rapids, hosted by Grant
Wood AEA.
   The first day of the conference was designed for Autism teams from across the state to
network and share resources. The morning began with updates from Wendy Trotter, MS, SLP,
Education Consultant-Autism, on the work of the Department of Education’s Autism Design Team.
Breakout sessions focused on teamwork, parent involvement and education, peer awareness, and
technology. The day closed with an Ed Camp session, where teams from across the state shared their
models of professional development and how they focus on social engagement.
   The second day of the conference featured Emily Rubin, MS, CCC-SLP, co-author of the SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Support) Framework. She presented “A Developmental Framework for Evidence-Based Practices for the Autism Spectrum: Using the SCERTS Assessment to Identify Social and Emotional Priorities” Information on the neurodevelopment of the child, training on the SCERTS.assessment, and practice using the information to develop appropriate goals and accommodations was included in the presentation.
