What is Video Modeling?
Video modeling is an intervention/strategy that is used with students with Autism. Video modeling can help with:

  • Observing correct behavior
  • Teaching imaginative play skills
  • Teaching perspective taking
  • Increasing existing positive behaviors
  • Modeling, then teaching imitative play
  • Preparing for a new event or activity

Video Modeling: Why does it work for children with Autism?

  • Over selective attention
  • Restricted field of focus
  • Preference for visual stimuli particularly by the screen
  • Cost effective instruction
  • Realistic contexts
  • Avoids face to face interactions

  • Identify the skill to be learned
  • Plan what content to video
  • Know the equipment
  • Determine how to use the video for instruction

Video Self Modeling:

  • Video showing a person performing only desired behaviors
  • The person is subject of their video (watching themselves)
  • All negative behaviors are removed through editing
  • One type of Video Modeling
